Lotzorai is one of only two seaside towns on the eastern coast of Sardinia to be part of the National Association of Olive Oil Cities, a virtuous circle created to promote the culture of olives and quality extra virgin olive oil, protect the environment and the olive-growing landscape, disseminate the history of olive growing, and ensure consumer protection through the promotion of designations of origin. Although Lotzorai joined the Association recently (2022), the connection between the community of Lotzorai and olive oil has ancient origins, and today our area is a top destination for an unforgettable olive oil tourism experience:
here, you can enjoy everything from olive harvesting to guided tours of the olive oil mill, including tastings, tasting and cooking classes, educational workshops for families and children, snacks in the olive groves, and walks in the shade of centuries-old olive trees. All unforgettable experiences centered around extra virgin olive oil, the cornerstone of the Mediterranean diet.
The mill has been in continuous operation for over a century. Despite changing locations and ownership, the facility has remained consistently operational over time. Currently, the modern machinery belongs to the Tangianu family. The mill is a continuous, cold-pressed mill, and its millstones process the olives of small producers in Lotzorai and neighboring towns, both for the family’s annual supply and for a small, authentic production, marketed by the family itself, with a wealth of innovation and creativity.

Approximately, each family in the village produces a quantity of oil for its own needs.
In the town and in the surrounding lands, imposing centuries-old olive trees stand tall.
More recent olive groves, scattered throughout the municipal area, produce the Ogliastrina, Bosana, and Semidana varieties of endemic origin, which are included in the production regulations for Protected Origin olive oil. Extra virgin olive oil, with its values and principles linked to healthy eating, a healthy lifestyle, respect for tradition, and a genuine spirit of conviviality, contributes to providing Lotzorai, and the entire surrounding area, with important longevity values, so much so that Ogliastra has been recognized as one of the few important “blue zones” in the world.
